*Actively Seeking Literary Representation*

Joseph Van Landschoot is seeking representation for the new adult, science fiction novel: True Volition (106,000 words).

It starts with a question: Is there such a thing as true volition? Leaving high school, I was asking questions like this, and what it means to exist in this ever-changing world. I read books like the Denial of Death, and listened to Ted Talks about concepts like determinism. The more we as a species learned about our own neurology the less certain it became that we have traditional free will. How do we carve our own path in life with that looming insight? These ideas blended into my early working life, but that wasn’t the only thing. We all survived Y2K but the next apocalypse was coming up: 2012! Silly, but looking back at it now I think the only reason my friend group and I gave these fears any attention was because the feeling of impending doom fit the same emotional response as what it meant to leave the nest and grow up.

In this modern Canadian epic, the main character Nathan experiences true events, and many that are more fantastical. He starts off timid, just graduating high-school in 1996, but quickly grows up due to external circumstances. After a romantic encounter with his classmate V (who shares in a special ability to feel the history of Canada with him), he is warned by a neighbouring alien of an apocalypse that only he can stop. Then his mother calls to tell him his father has died. The overwhelming information leads to him vanishing without a trace.
Years later, V finds him on the other side of the country and invites him to quit his job and join her biker gang of nomadic punks called The People’s Deviants to live free. During their road trip from Edmonton Alberta, to Quispamsis New Brunswick, they learn the city of Toronto might be harbouring an old member that murdered their friend. The story follows Nathan as he fronts the herculean task of stopping an event that feels as impossible as stopping a wave crashing ashore. He faces, both very human, and cosmic consequences as he overcomes the grief of loss, finds love, and struggles to make up his own mind on how he wants to live his life. By the end I hope to have you all ask the same question: Is there such a thing as true volition?

I have written a short film script titled: Agent Heads, which won multiple awards including the Bronze Award for Best Original Story at the Independent Shorts Awards in Los Angeles in August 2022. My other written work includes Tales Within (2023), a short story collection featuring six projects: Space Maze, Paradise in Trouble, Honey Trapped, The People’s, The Devil You Thought You Knew, and Zones. Just recently it has found a home in Indigo’s shelves under their consignment agreement. I hold a diploma in Writing for Publication (Mohawk College) and have worked in television (Blue’s Clues and You!, Season Four).

Welcome to wacky whims from one weird wonder-washed writer

Pleased, proud even, to present the produced portfolio of possibly the most profound pundit in pretense, poetry, and prose: Joe.

A man with a passion for creation

Creativity can cascade creations that shake, shock, and shape the world around us. I’m proud to find myself at a place, time, and cogency to be one of the merry many in the pernicious personal profession of such an eclectic cause.

Thoughts

Thought are were you can find my post, articles, and unfettered ramblings in medium length style.

Poetry

Poetry, the thing so many people believe to be rule-free, yet has more rules than any other literary pursuit.

Art

While I don’t find myself creating visual works of art that much these days, I saved my collection here.

Conversations

Could you believe I love to talk? Crazy, I know. It all depends on the context. I think that’s the same with most people. Bring up a topic and an open mind, and I’m there.

Novels

  • A world of thought-provoking tales.
  • Celebrations of the human condition.
  • Ideas to dance on your dreams.

“Live, laugh, laden.”
